Melancholy

Someone told me you were melancholy I thought I have not noticed On that last of our meetings For your smile lit up the room In that small café’ That sat quietly along the Rhine We shared a bottle of Chateau Pichon red Your favorite I fed you little pieces of French bread You laughed a gentle laugh Soft as parchment clouds I looked deep into your majestic eyes Something was happening to me I had a feeling I have never had before Certainly not like this I was falling in love with you I never wanted to leave that small café’ Yet time can alter dreams As the old clock along the river Chimed out what I had dreaded the most You held my hands within yours And with a soft whisper, you said I must go I could have held you there for a lifetime Perhaps even an eternity We walked along the cobblestone street As the rain fell upon us Like velvet drops of love from heaven I put my umbrella up And pulled you in close to me And opened the door to your car You stopped and looked at me Like you never have before I did not want to let you go I leaned in and you kissed me You drove off like a skylark in the night I went home and waited And waited a little more And the phone never did ring And it is I who is the one That is now Melancholy I Miss you My love.. - Ken Riccio original poems ©
