Just Smile, My Dear

Sometimes I can feel the chains wrap around me, The chains you cast, yet somehow cannot see. You cut so sharply with words, but cannot seem to hear, “Just sit still and smile, my dear.” The walls cave in where love should fill, “Sit down and smile, girl - you know the drill.” Sometimes I smile so much that my life feels fake, Other times I wonder how much more smiling I can take. I hope one day the walls will open back up, And maybe then I won’t feel quite so stuck. I want so badly to break these chains, But I’m afraid that if I do, they’ll all see the stains. I love you with my entire heart, But I’m tired of smiling - of playing the part.
