I forgot myself.
How could I not remember? While others slept, escaping into dreams or playing make believe, I spent countless hours honing my steel in the real world. The time spent along with the blood, sweat, and tears not wasted. They paid for peace of mind in the face of chaos. Whether alone or with like minded others, I was preparing. I was training for this. I have always lived this.
Mistakes are not forgiven, this is life. Nothing cares how much heart you have; it only matters what you can stomach. There is no hero on some stained big screen, no action worthy of Marvel. You can turn your away, but some of us must watch deeply as the last bit of life drifts from the eyes of each day.
The truth here is that you save yourself first. Afterward, you can look for another worth saving. Keep in mind if they haven’t saved themselves, they might not be worth saving. No choice is without punishment. You'd better be ready to do terrible things to keep the monsters at bay. Learn to understand and you won’t lose much sleep.
This is the world I know, I never left my element . My gear is worn but proven. Each piece an extension. With or without any of it I will be fine or I die. It won’t bother me either way. My mind is my greatest strength. I spin chaos into creation. I do not doubt me.
Yet somehow, for a brief second, I forgot myself.
That costly second. There will not be another.
