I woke in a dream
Her mother holds her as if in a dream
She doesn’t look at her with disappointment and anger
How could she when she’s her baby
The baby lives and breaths for the mother
Feeding off the life she so willingly provides
She looks on as the babe watches the sky
The trees create shadows that fall over her small cheeks
The leaves cradle her frail bones as if she’d never change
A mother is a funny concept
She holds life cradles and protects
She gives her bones and blood and tears to the life she doesn’t know yet
Yet she feels as though she recognizes this little life
She feels a sense of calm and longing
Not knowing the expectations and knowing is just a dream
She doesn’t want to let go of the image of the babe
The person she’d grow to be
She doesn’t know that the way she lives her life,
The life she soon lives to shape her own dreams and selfish desires
Creates an image for the child
The child soon grows to live as her mother
As babes do in this life
That life she fed off of has grown in her
Festered and twisted
She’s no longer that babe her mother longed for
She’s no longer the image the mother so wished she’d become
But it’s only a dream
